Is it time to retire Norton Ghost?

I’ve used Norton Ghost for years but have been eternally frustrated with the software as I can’t get it to do what I really want it to.

Ideally I’d like to create a customized version of a master restore disk similar to what used to ship with most computers that consists of the current OS (MS XP) and all my core programs installed (MS Office, iTunes, etc). Then the only thing I would need to maintain backups of is my documents folder itself and of course my WoW folder.

With Norton Ghost the easiest setup consists of a backup of your entire computer plus a record of the changed files (called incremental backups) - unfortunately there is no easy way to burn the initial backup to a DVD to use as a master restore disk and Norton uses a special file format for all of its backup files and not the industry standard Zip files.

All of this has me thinking that maybe it’s time to retire Norton Ghost and just look for a program that creates regular Zip files…maybe something like ZipBackup?

Outlook Express has to go!

I’ve had it with Outlook Express!

Since my computer crashed I’ve spent hours trying to re-import my email into Outlook Express. I had backed up all of my identities so I have all the information and yet OE won’t import the data! I’ve sucessfully used Aid4Mail from Fookes Software to read the files so I can import the emails into another email program. I’m currently evaluating PocoMail from Poco Systems as a viable alternative to OE.
